Sussex Visions live @Worldwide Neuro

We are excited to join the new Worldwide Neuroscience project (https://www.worldwideneuro.com/) with a series of talks about vision science. Thanks to Jeff Diamond for kicking off the series earlier today with his exciting talk about inner retinal processing in mice! With 300 live participants, and by now (only a few hours later) >600 hits, we think this has gone rather well!

Stay tuned for the next talks which will include the likes of EJ Chichilnisky, Marion Silies, Tim Gollisch, Katrin Franke, Peter Neri,  Thomas Euler and others!

Thanks to our very own Maxime Zimmermann for hosting and organising this one, and to Tim Vogels for inviting us to participate in the first place!

You can watch Jeff’s talk here.

First PhD student from the lab passes her viva!

We are delighted to announce that Dr (!) Noora Nevala has just passed her PhD defense with flying colours! She is the first PhD student from the lab to graduate!

For her PhD, Noora studies the natural visual world of Zebra fish in the context of their visual system and behaviours. Her papers from this time include:

1. Zimmermann MJY*, Nevala NE*, Yoshimatsu T*, Osorio D, Nilsson DE, Berens P, Baden T§. (2018). Zebrafish differentially process colour across visual space to match natural scenes. Current Biology 28(1-15). direct link. (bioRxiv version). pdf.

2. Nevala NE§ and Baden T§. (2019). A low-cost hyperspectral scanner for natural imaging above and under water. Scientific Reports (9) 10799. (biorXiv version). direct link. pdf.

3. Yoshimatsu T§, Schroeder C, Nevala NE, Berens P, Baden T§. Cellular and molecular mechanisms of photoreceptor tuning for prey capture in larval zebrafish. bioRxiv doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/744615. direct linkpdf. (& Neuron, in press).

Congratulations form the whole lab! Thank you also to Jenny Boston (Sussex) and Nick Roberts (Bristol) for serving as examiners, and to Leon Lagnado for chairing the viva voce!
